ISLAMABAD/KARACHI (MNN); Pakistan observed Muharram 9 on Thursday with deep religious reverence and elaborate security arrangements across the country to commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Husain (RA), his family members, and loyal companions in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD.

Mourning processions and religious gatherings were held in all major cities, including Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta, and Hyderabad, while federal and provincial authorities implemented comprehensive security plans to ensure peaceful observance of the occasion.

In Islamabad, the central Muharram 9 procession commenced after Zuhr prayers from the Markazi Isna Ashari Imambargah in Sector G-6/2 and concluded late at night after passing through its traditional route. Similar large-scale processions were held in Karachi, Lahore, Hyderabad, Peshawar, and Quetta, drawing thousands of mourners.

The main Karachi procession departed from Nishtar Park and concluded at Imambargah Hussainia Iranian in Kharadar. In Lahore, the central procession emerged from Pando Street in Islampura and proceeded along its traditional route before culminating at Khaima-i-Sadaat Imambargah. Hyderabad’s principal procession started from Imambargah Chahardah Masoomeen in Latifabad, while Quetta’s central gathering began from Alamdar Road and ended at Mominabad Imambargah.

According to official reports, hundreds of religious gatherings and dozens of processions were held nationwide. In Lahore alone, authorities reported 81 processions and 386 religious congregations on Muharram 9.

To oversee security preparations, Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry chaired a high-level meeting attended by home secretaries and senior police officials from all provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. During the meeting, participants reviewed security arrangements and discussed measures to safeguard mourners and maintain public order.

The minister emphasized that protecting citizens’ lives and property remained the government’s foremost priority and directed law enforcement agencies to further strengthen security measures.

Security was particularly heightened in Islamabad, where around 16,000 personnel, including police, Rangers, and army troops, were deployed. Authorities established multi-layered security cordons, installed scanners at procession entry points, deployed armoured personnel carriers, and used drones for digital monitoring. The route was cleared by bomb disposal units, while female police officers and volunteers conducted security checks for women participants.

The Ministry of Interior also activated a special mobile application, “Mehfooz Muharram,” enabling citizens to report suspicious activities, security concerns, and emergencies in real time.

Punjab deployed more than 70,000 security personnel on Muharram 9, while over 152,000 police officers were assigned duties throughout the month. Snipers were stationed on rooftops along procession routes, CCTV surveillance was enhanced, and modern drones and body cameras were utilized to monitor sensitive locations.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had earlier directed the implementation of a three-tier security strategy and instructed organizers to activate QR-coded panic buttons installed at thousands of imambargahs across the province.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, authorities deployed approximately 43,000 police personnel province-wide, including 12,000 in Peshawar alone. Three-layer security arrangements, bomb disposal teams, sniffer dogs, surveillance cameras, and plainclothes personnel were utilized to secure processions and majalis. The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service in Peshawar remained suspended on Muharram 9 and 10 as part of precautionary measures.

Balochistan authorities adopted extraordinary security measures, particularly in Quetta, where procession routes were sealed with barriers, barbed wire, and heavy vehicles. Mobile phone and internet services remained suspended in several areas, while hospitals were placed on emergency alert.

Meanwhile, a tragic incident occurred in Rohri, Sindh, where four people reportedly died due to suffocation and fourteen others sustained minor injuries during Muharram activities. Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar expressed condolences and ordered authorities to maintain close coordination among police, rescue services, medical teams, and district administrations to handle emergencies effectively.

In Karachi, more than 20,000 police personnel, including traffic police, were deployed to ensure security and facilitate traffic management. Alternative traffic routes were introduced due to road closures associated with major processions.

Officials across the country expressed satisfaction with the overall arrangements and praised the cooperation of religious scholars, procession organizers, volunteers, and citizens in maintaining peace and harmony during the observance.

Muharram commemorates the supreme sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Husain (RA) and his companions at Karbala, a defining event in Islamic history symbolizing steadfastness, justice, sacrifice, and resistance against tyranny.
