ISLAMABAD (MNN); Political activity within the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has intensified as the party moves closer to appointing the next Governor of Gilgit-Baltistan, with several senior political figures actively seeking support for the prestigious constitutional office.
According to party sources, influential politicians, members of prominent political families, and former election candidates have increased their engagement with the party leadership in an effort to secure the position. However, some members of the PML-N Parliamentary Board believe that individuals who recently contested elections should not be considered for the governorship, advocating instead for a consensus-based and non-controversial nominee.
Sources said the party leadership is looking for a candidate with a strong organizational background, proven political credibility, administrative experience, and broad public acceptability across Gilgit-Baltistan.
Among the leading contenders is Ashraf Sada from Baltistan, who is viewed within party circles as a loyal and long-serving worker with a clean political reputation and a significant role in strengthening the party’s organizational structure.
According to insiders, a shortlist of five candidates will be submitted to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PML-N President Nawaz Sharif for final approval.
Sources further revealed that the names of former judges and technocrats are also under consideration as the leadership seeks to ensure merit, administrative competence, and balanced regional representation in the selection process.
The final decision on the appointment is expected within the next few days after consultations with the party’s senior leadership are concluded.
