The world’s oceans experienced their hottest June on record, scientists announced, warning that rising sea temperatures are likely to fuel more intense heatwaves and extreme weather events in the coming months. According to climate scientists, global sea surface temperatures reached a record high for the month of June, highlighting the continuing impact of human-induced climate change.

Experts say the unusual ocean warmth could intensify weather patterns, increasing the risk of powerful storms, prolonged droughts, heavy rainfall, and marine heatwaves. Oceans absorb the vast majority of the excess heat generated by greenhouse gas emissions, making them a key indicator of global warming. As sea temperatures continue to rise, they contribute to coral bleaching, melting polar ice, rising sea levels, and disruptions to marine ecosystems. Scientists cautioned that without significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, extreme weather events are expected to become more frequent and severe, posing growing risks to communities, economies, and ecosystems around the world.
