DUBAI (MNN); India will host the inaugural ICC Women’s Champions Trophy in 2027 after taking over hosting duties from Sri Lanka for the six-team international tournament.
The tournament is scheduled to take place from February 14 to 28, 2027, with matches set to be played in Mumbai and Vadodara.
Australia, England, hosts India, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka will compete for the first-ever Women’s Champions Trophy title.
The six participating teams secured qualification based on the ICC Women’s T20I rankings, with July 6 serving as the cut-off date for determining the lineup.
The new tournament will add another major ICC competition to the women’s international cricket calendar, giving the world’s leading teams an opportunity to compete for a prestigious title.
India Takes Over Hosting Duties from Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka had initially been chosen to host the inaugural edition, but the hosting responsibility has subsequently been transferred to India.
Reports indicate that Sri Lanka still needs to carry out certain reforms in line with ICC requirements. The matter was discussed and decisions were made during the ICC Annual Conference in July.
India will now prepare venues in Mumbai and Vadodara for the two-week competition.
Six Teams to Compete for Historic Title
The tournament will feature six of the strongest teams in women’s international cricket. Australia, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka earned their places under the qualification criteria based on the rankings.
With only six teams in the field, competition for qualification was intense.
The inaugural event is also expected to further boost the profile of women’s cricket in India, where the sport has experienced growing popularity, viewership and commercial investment.
The ICC is expected to announce further details about the tournament format, fixtures and specific venues ahead of the competition.
