The University of Gujrat’s recent progress demonstrates how academic leadership, responsible governance and a commitment to students can strengthen a public university. Under Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Zahoor ul Haq, Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, the institution has achieved an encouraging milestone in the Times Higher Education Rankings 2027. As reported, UOG now stands seventh among Pakistani universities and fifth in Punjab, improving upon its tenth national position in 2025. This recognition reflects progress in teaching, research and international engagement, while placing a greater responsibility on the university to sustain these gains. Recent appointments of assistant professors have strengthened teaching capacity and improved the student–teacher ratio, creating better conditions for academic interaction, supervision and student support. Several new academic programmes have also broadened educational opportunities. Their value lies in connecting disciplinary knowledge with changing professional demands while maintaining the standards students deserve. Together, these developments support an academic environment in which institutional growth translates into a better educational experience.

Research provides another important foundation for this progress. Within UOG, the Faculty of Sciences contributes the highest number of research articles, with most appearing in Q1 journals. These publications strengthen the university’s academic visibility and demonstrate its researchers’ engagement with internationally recognized scholarly platforms. Publication quality must also be accompanied by research that addresses meaningful questions and contributes to society. As Dean of Sciences and Director of the Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization, I consider the connection between scientific inquiry and practical needs central to our institutional purpose. UOG’s expanding international outlook, particularly its enhanced collaboration through the CPEC Consortium of Universities, offers opportunities to deepen this connection. Academic partnerships can support joint research, the exchange of expertise and wider participation by students and early-career researchers. Their lasting value will depend on the work they enable and the knowledge they generate. Linking international engagement with local priorities can help the university contribute more effectively to industry, communities and public institutions, while strengthening the research culture within its own departments.

Academic ambition must remain grounded in financial responsibility and educational inclusion. UOG has saved more than Rs. 200 million through improved financial governance, demonstrating the importance of careful stewardship of public resources. Such savings strengthen the institution’s capacity to pursue academic priorities and sustain student support. Equally significant is the provision of a 100 per cent orphan scholarship for undergraduate students. For young people who have lost parental support, financial assistance can protect the opportunity to complete their education and build an independent future. This commitment recognizes that academic potential should receive support regardless of difficult family circumstances. Financial discipline and student welfare therefore reinforce the university’s public mission. The progress achieved under Professor Dr Zahoor ul Haq’s leadership also reflects the collective efforts of faculty, researchers, administrative staff and students. Our task now is to consolidate these achievements through strong teaching, relevant research and accountable management. The University of Gujrat’s growing recognition is a source of pride for the region, but its most enduring contribution will be the opportunities it creates and the graduates it prepares to serve society.
