ISLAMABAD (MNN); Significant progress has been made in the investigation into the tragic fire incident at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), with the inquiry committee reportedly preparing its second report.
According to sources, the committee has carried out a detailed examination of the technical, administrative and other relevant aspects of the incident. Available evidence and facts surrounding the tragedy were also thoroughly reviewed.
Sources said the committee investigated the possible causes of the fire in accordance with modern forensic and technical requirements. During the inquiry, the possibility emerged that a fault or tripping in the air-conditioning system may have triggered the blaze.
According to the preliminary assessment, the reported tripping in the AC system may have caused a fire that spread rapidly and engulfed the room within a short period.
The inquiry has also identified possible administrative negligence and departmental shortcomings. However, based on the overall assessment of the evidence collected so far, indications suggest that the incident may ultimately be classified as an accident.
Sources said that if the final inquiry report concludes that the fire was accidental, criminal proceedings against the suspended officers or any other individuals may not be recommended.
However, departmental action could still be proposed against officials found responsible for administrative negligence, procedural failures or other departmental lapses.
The inquiry committee is now reviewing all aspects of the incident before finalising its report. The final document is expected to include findings regarding the cause of the fire, administrative shortcomings and recommendations aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future.
The committee’s final report is expected to be submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office soon, after which a decision regarding further action will be taken in light of its findings and recommendations.
It is pertinent to note that any final decision to declare the incident an accident, or to refrain from initiating proceedings against any individual, will depend on the inquiry committee’s complete report and its approval by the competent authorities.
