Pakistan Tightens Austerity Measures, Bans Foreign Travel and Further Cuts Fuel Consumption

ISLAMABAD – MNN: The Government of Pakistan has decided to further tighten its austerity drive by introducing additional fuel conservation and expenditure control measures, according to a fresh notification issued by the Cabinet Division.

The notification states that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved the recommendations of the Committee on Monitoring and Implementation of Fuel Conservation Measures, authorizing new restrictions that will remain in force until June 30, 2026.

Under the revised measures, fuel allocations for official government vehicles have been reduced by an additional 50 percent, while 60 percent of government vehicles will continue to remain off the roads as part of the conservation strategy.

The government has also imposed a complete ban on foreign visits and official overseas travel, except for cases already exempted under previous directives issued by the Cabinet Division.

According to the notification, all previously announced austerity and fuel-saving measures will remain effective for the periods specified in their respective notifications. Measures without a fixed expiry date will continue to be enforced until further orders.

Officials say the latest decisions are aimed at ensuring strict implementation of petroleum conservation policies, reducing non-essential public expenditure and promoting efficient utilization of government resources.

The notification will be published in an Extraordinary Gazette of Pakistan for immediate implementation.
