Former Pakistan Captain Shahid Afridi Visits UN Headquarters

NEW YORK – MNN: Former Pakistan cricket captain and legendary all-rounder Shahid Afridi visited the United Nations Headquarters in New York at the invitation of Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

During the visit, Afridi was given a guided tour of the UN Headquarters and was briefed on the Organization’s work in promoting international peace and security, sustainable development, multilateral cooperation and global dialogue.

Welcoming the former cricketer at the UN Headquarters, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad praised Shahid Afridi for his outstanding contributions to Pakistan cricket, noting that his explosive batting style and remarkable performances brought joy to millions of cricket fans around the world.

The Ambassador also commended Afridi’s humanitarian and welfare initiatives, saying his charitable efforts have positively impacted countless lives, particularly among underprivileged communities.

During the interaction, Ambassador Asim highlighted the role of sports diplomacy as a powerful tool that transcends borders, promotes mutual understanding and strengthens ties among nations and peoples. He emphasized that sports can serve as an effective platform for advancing peace, goodwill and international cooperation.

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad also briefed Shahid Afridi on the activities of Pakistan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, including Pakistan’s active engagement in promoting multilateralism, dialogue, diplomacy and efforts aimed at maintaining international peace and security.

Shahid Afridi thanked Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad and the Pakistan Mission for the invitation and warm hospitality extended to him during his visit. He appreciated the Mission’s efforts in fostering understanding, dialogue and cooperation among nations and supporting the peaceful settlement of disputes.

The former Pakistan captain noted that sports and diplomacy can jointly play a constructive role in building bridges between communities, reducing differences and contributing towards a more peaceful and cooperative global environment.

Ambassador Usman Jadoon, Deputy Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, along with officers of the Pakistan Mission, was also present on the occasion.

Later, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad hosted a dinner in honour of Shahid Afridi, marking a visit that reflected the shared belief in the positive role sports and diplomacy can play in promoting peace, understanding and stronger international relations.
